    Suggestion about vote avatars...

I honestly wasn't sure where to post this! I only saw one post [a bit below this one]
about the vote avatars taking a while to get approved, but it was a year old...

I think my vote avatar has been in limbo for about 3 months now, and it still
hasn't gone through. I figure there must be a lot ahead of mine...

Anyway, I just wondered if there was maybe a way to implement some
sort of queue that we could view to see how much longer we have on
our waiting. nothing flashy, just maybe something on the manage
avatar page that says something along the lines of:

current postion in queue / total in queue

    # / #

So say I was 167 or something from being shown, out of like..57895893lol.

current postion in queue / total in queue

    167 / 57895893lol

I don't know how much programming it would require, but since TWC
seems to be in the business of lists and numbers, it just seems like not
that big of a deal. And it would really put my mind at ease to know that
at least my avatar was being considered, lol.

Anyway, hopefully the mods or whoever browse this forum enough to notice
this...I feel like it would be really useful. =)

I agree. There should be a way to move the avatars along quicker automatically what with computer bots and all. Let's put computers to work for us at least before they take over the world and kill us all in a cold play of survival.

    Re: Suggestion about vote avatars...

Lmao. Well it would rock if it did go faster? But I'd seriously just
settle for there being a damn number there, so I have at least an
idea of how long I'm gonna be waiting. As it is, I don't even know
if it worked. I mean I am sure it did, but it's really terrible that
there's nothing in there saying, "hey, this avy is okay, it will
appear eventually, here's how far you are from the top of
    the list" etc. Yanno xD?

Also, don't worry about the computers. We're fine until some
dumbass decides to create a skynet.

So I guess either they don't like the idea or they just don't check
that often =( I am bummed, I thought it would be a nice feature.

    Re: Suggestion about vote avatars...

Actually I most definitely do read these forums, and I intend to take care of the avatars soon.

My big problem is that the majority of the submitted avatars don't fit the standards.  If I could just click "accepted", then it'd be great, but no, most of them are a headache.

These are the problems I encounter regularly.

    • No name on the image
    • Wrong name on the image
    • Abbreviated or short name on the image
    • Unreadable font for name on the image
    • Name is similar or same color as background on the image.
    • Name is the webcomic instead of the character.
    • Name is a symbol for the character otherwise known as X.
    • profanity in the image
    • Religious parodies in the image.
    • Giant resolution image (300x300+)
    • Mega giant resolution image (1000x1000+)
    • Submitting of vote incentives as character avatars
    • submitting of comic avatar or banner advertisement as character avatar.

Probably 2/3 of the images are messed up in some way, such that I can't accept them.  A lot of them look fantastic, they just aren't acceptable.  Some of them are funny, but once again, I can't just put anything into the vote pages, so they have to be PG.

As far as a vote order, once your avatar is accepted, its rotated through, probably several hundred times a month, possibly several thousand.  The new vote page gives more prominance to the vote avatars, I hope people like them.

Finally, I had intended on approving all of the ones that could be approved this weekend, but I installed Windows 7 and its really taken me more time than I expected to get everything setup.  Fantastic OS, but still taking me a lot of time.

I hope to get everything done this weekend at the latest, sorry for being unresponsive.

    Re: Suggestion about vote avatars...

Wow, please tell me you aren't the only one doing all that. That sounds horrible.
I'm so sorry lol. /hug@you xD

Also, that is just retarded, that people can't even take the time to read the guidelines...
and I guess there is no way to auto-police that, like when posting avatars on forums?
Like the loader or whatever checks the size against what it ought to be and doesn't
allow it if it's too big?

Anyway, I didn't realize you were having to approve them manually. I guess that a
queue would be sort of pointless cos by the time it's 'approved' it's already good to
go and there's no wait time after that lol... oh well.

Thanks for the reply. I had no idea that this was like a one man show lol.

    Re: Suggestion about vote avatars...

I could definitely restrict the size, and I should, but the rest, no, no way to autodetect what its doing.  Anyways, my exwife used to handle approving the avatars, but since shes my ex, I don't feel comfortable asking her to help with any of the website stuff, anyways, I'm trying to get it under control, maybe I'll make an admin I can run on my iphone or something so I can do it in my spare time...

Anyways, I'm still scheduled to take care of the backlog this weekend, so everyone who submitted a valid avatar should have their avatar up and going by the end of this weekend. :D

    Thanks for the net hug!

    Re: Suggestion about vote avatars...

Yikes. Lol. I can't believe you are the only one doing that...you should like
call out for volunteers or something @_@

And def put a restriction up, there is no reason not to, esp since you clearly
state it in the guidelines xD
Hopefully that would help a bit...

    Re: Suggestion about vote avatars...

Well its me and the TWC guineas, Morris and Patrick

Seriously though, I'm going to put in some work, and one thing I'd really like is to make some of the TWC stuff more community driven, so we'll see how it goes. :)

"More community driven" would be great. Too bad there can't be a way to merge the best of your site with the best of thewebcomiclist.com. Now that could create a bigger community.
